Sri Hemkund Sahib (also spelled Hemkunt Sahib) is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for Sikhs. According to Sikh traditions, Guru Gobind Singh Ji mentioned this place in his autobiography as a site associated with meditation. The shrine remained largely unknown for many years until it was identified by Pandit Tara Singh Narotam. Later, a gurudwara was established here in 1960 with the efforts of Sant Sohan Singh and Havaldar Baba Modan Singh.
Today, Sri Hemkund Sahib attracts pilgrims and visitors from across India and abroad. The shrine is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of approximately 15,000 feet above sea level. Due to weather conditions, the pilgrimage season generally remains open from June to September, subject to the schedule announced by the shrine management.
The Hemkund Sahib Yatra generally begins in June. Travellers can reach Govindghat by road, from where the trekking route starts. The route passes through the Panch Prayag region and offers views of rivers, valleys, and Himalayan landscapes.
Accommodation and food facilities are available at various gurudwaras and guest houses along the route. Many pilgrims also visit the nearby Valley of Flowers, which is located within the same region. On the return journey, travellers may visit other important gurudwaras such as Paonta Sahib, Bhangani Sahib, Tirgarhi Sahib, and Shergah Sahib.
The Valley of Flowers is a national park located in Uttarakhand and is recognized for its alpine meadows and seasonal wildflowers. In 1931, British mountaineers Frank S. Smythe, Eric Shipton, and R. L. Holdsworth came across the valley while returning from an expedition to Mount Kamet. Frank S. Smythe later wrote a book titled Valley of Flowers describing the region.
The valley is home to a wide variety of wildflowers, including orchids, lilies, poppies, geraniums, and several other Himalayan plant species. It also supports diverse wildlife, including butterflies, birds, and various mammal species. Natural streams flowing through the valley contribute to its unique ecosystem and landscape.
Travellers are advised to check the latest weather conditions, trekking guidelines, and opening schedules before planning their visit.
